Reading these units on a listing
Tatami mats (畳, jō) measure rooms. The number before 畳 is the mat count, so 6畳 is a six-mat room of about 9.7 m². Kitchens and combined spaces appear as LDK (living–dining–kitchen) plus a mat count, e.g. "8畳 LDK".
Tsubo (坪) measures land and whole-floor area. One tsubo is two mats — about 3.3 m². Rural akiya land of 50–150 tsubo (165–495 m²) is common.
Square meters (㎡) appear in official documents and on portals alongside tsubo. Square feet are never used in Japan — convert before comparing to homes back home.
